Beechworth 2013 - Update

"Pre-War MGs at Bathurst"

Reprinted from the Pre War MG Newsletter.

Tim and Rob report on planning for our next Beechworth Rally - this time in Bathurst, NSW…

In 1938, the Australian Grand Prix was held for the first time at the new circuit of Mt Panorama at Bathurst and the entry list included an NE Magnette specially imported for the event by John Sherwood as well as three K3s and six other MGs. In 1939, another NE, two Q-Types, and a J3 all raced there.

As 2013 will be the 75th anniversary of this event, it is both logical and highly desirable that we celebrate "Pre-War MGs at Bathurst" by holding our National Rally there over the weekend of 25-27th October. It will follow very closely the wonderful format established by Jennie and Graeme Jackson at the first four ‘Beechworths’. It will have a strong racing theme but there will be the familiar display and touring events for all MGs in the usually empty and undulating roads around Bathurst, from Hill End to Trunkey Creek.

We will endeavour to attract as many of the racing MGs as possible that competed at the four events at Bathurst in the years 1938 to 1940. A full list of these will be published later and it is likely to be a most impressive array of the best competition Pre-War MGs and anyone who misses this weekend will sorely regret it. - Tim

Rob
The two rally directors are Tim Shellshear and Rob Dunsterville. Tim, who is event director, has suffered MG-itis all his life from early teenage years and inevitably a TC was his first car. A practicing architect, Tim drives the ex David Price s/c Magna special F1254, plus other things. He is the immediate past president of the VSCCA (NSW) and has a track record of organising rally and competition events. Rob, communications director, is a very well known writer on MG topics, an event promoter and concours judge who was responsible for bringing many Pre-War MGs into Australia in the 1970s.

He still drives the 1954 TF that he bought in 1968 plus a 2002 MGF. Rob has many years’ experience in the special events, exhibitions and conference industry in Australia and overseas. The committee of highly experienced supporters, who will provide wise counsel and manpower as needed, are John Lackey (TA special), Rob Everett (L type), Harry Hickling (SAs, F types and ND) and Jeff Newey (TB).

There will be much more information in the next Newsletter. In the meantime, accommodation can be booked at Rally Headquarters, the Citigate Hotel, (phone 1300 88 7979) mentioning the Pre-War MG

If needed, Tim can be contacted on tim.shellshear@tsarchitects.com.au
