Current Owner: Col Schiller, Qld.

Information: All eight Q-types were built at Abingdon as racing cars.  They were available as either single or 2-seaters.

QA0256 was built in June 1934 as a 2-seater and painted green.

History: (As written by Col Schiller and printed in Pre-war Newsletter March 2024.)

“Look what I bought!  For many years I have had a Q-type M.G. on my bucket list and finally one has become available. Thank you to Beryl Ackroyd for allowing me to look after this legendary Q-type.

QA0256 was first commissioned on 19/06/1934 and owned by Dr. A. R. Samuel. It won many races at Brooklands between 1934 and 1938, finally achieving a Brooklands 120 mph trophy in 1938. Only four M.G.s have achieved this feat: three K3s and QA0256.

In November 1938, the car was sold to Leo Kelly in Australia and has remained here ever since. It has raced under the skilled hands of Peter Vennermark, Stan Jones (Alan Jones’s father), Otto Stone and Les and Rod Murphy. It is known locally as the Murphy Q-type.

The engine from QA0258 (another record-breaking Q-type) 1259A was fitted to QA0256 in 1938. This motor carried a Baronia bronze head, another innovation of Robin Jackson’s. The motor also has extra oil feed pipes and a Wade supercharger; initially a Zoller supercharger was fitted.

Once a minor amount of recommissioning is completed, QA0256 will return to the track for occasional runs. The car currently has 15inch wheels, hydraulic brakes, modern shock absorbers and lacks seat belts. I don’t have the intestinal fortitude of the earlier drivers and may also fit a roll cage. I’d like to fit a set of period 18 inch wheels, too, if anyone has some for sale.
