J2 4210
Midgets / / 198 views
Current owner: Allen Voskanian, NSW.
Information: Built at Abingdon 6/11/33 together with 4209 in CKD form, both were shipped directly to Motors Limited in South Australia arriving in Jan. 1934.
History: Motors Limited was a successful motor car dealer selling a variety of brands including Morris so these M.G. J2s may have been an experiment to establish a new line for the business however the cars were slow to sell;Â 4209 was fitted with a locally built two-seater body with swept wings by T.J. Richards however it was not delivered to its new owner until 19/12/34.
4210 was sold still without a body to J. Lavington Bonython and registered SA 948 on 30/8/34. It was then sent to Aspinall in Melbourne and fitted with one of their two-seat doorless bodies with cycle guards. With son Warren driving, the car won a night trial 2/12/34 and then on 2/3/35 it entered the record books by setting the Class G Land Speed Record at Sellick’s Beach, S.A. The speed was 76.49 mph and the record still stands as it can’t be broken because the rules have changed.
“The Advertiser” on 1935 recorded Warren Bonython being placed second in the J.C.C. 12hr. trial covering over 350 miles.
There is no further record of this car until being spotted in 2019 by chance in a NSW Service Station owned by Craig Ashmore. The car had belonged to Craig’s father who had been building it to race as a retirement project. Unfortunately his father passed away before completion.
Craig recalled playing in the body of the car in his father’s garden shed as a young child, that would have been circa 1960, at that time it was painted yellow, he did not know when it was bought or any other details.
He did remember that his father passed the J2 engine on to a local J2 owner because he had fitted a Grey Holden engine and a Jaguar style Moss gearbox.
Some years later, again by chance (the car had not moved) the car was seen by A.V. and after some interaction and giving some assistance to get the car running a deal was done. Allen stripped the car back and totally refreshed all the wearing parts because although new when fitted they were so old things like the clutch plate and brake shoes had deteriorated with age.
The car is now running, registered and regularly used.
