Current Owner: Jason Schofield, Qld.

MMM No: 223

Information: Built at Abingdon in 1933 and shipped to Lanes in Melbourne, Australia in CKD form together with L0594.  The two cars were on-sold to Britannia Motors who opened the boxes and began assembly, unfortunately as noted with other M.G.s they assembled, they managed to mix the parts and put the wrong engine into each chassis.  The identity plates, already stamped at Abingdon, were matched to the engines and the chassis number was ignored (out of site – out of mind!) It is known that 0594 was bodied by Aspinalls and it is possible that 0595 also received one of their bodies.

History: Early history unknown.  The first record of the car is when it appeared in 1960 in derelict condition when Otto Stone acquired its engine block (900A 97C) as a spare for his K3 (3016).  The chassis went to John Vickers and later made its way to NSW where eventually in 1970 Stuart Schofield bought it off Tony Edwards together with a number of other L-type parts.  Those parts included remnants of an L-type (number unknown) raced by Gordon Stewart in the early ’50s as well as parts of L0639 raced pre-war by Sqn Ldr Johnny Summers.

Using chassis L0595 as the basis, S.S. set about creating a replica of the Gordon Stewart racer, helped by Ivan Glasby the chassis was straightened and many extraneous holes welded over.  On hearing of the project Gordon Stewart himself became involved helping with the rebuilding of engine 973A 97C from the Summers car and adding a cylinder head from an NE.  A new pointed-tail body was fabricated by Ray Liley.

The completed car appeared at the 2013 and 2015 Pre-war rallies at Bathurst and various M.G.C.C. and V.S.C.C. events in NSW.

After S.S. passed away his estate sold the car through Donnington Auctions late 2024, the buyer was Jason Schofield (no relation), Jason served his apprenticeship at Rod Hiley’s Abingdon Motors, working on many different M.G.s including various K3s and an R-type.
