Current Owner: Terry and Julie Prodger, New South Wales

MMM No: 652

Information:  Built at Abingdon in 1935 as a 2-seater for the home market, finished in black with blue trim.  Delivered to P.J. Evans Ltd in Birmingham on 31 December 1935 and registered on 1 January 1936. The first owner was P.H. Plant of Pensnett, Staffordshire.

History: Early history unknown.

The earliest knowledge we have of this car comes from the memory of the Register’s co-founder; Walter Magilton. At a recent (Sept. 2025) meeting Wal reminisced that in the early days of the register P-w M.G. parts were relatively plentiful and he had accumulated a large pile surplus to his needs. In the late ’60s or early ’70s he advertised a portion of these as a potential rebuild project at a nominal price.  The advert generated many inquiries and from these he chose the person he thought would be most likely to complete the project.  That person was Graeme Pain who was well known and successful furniture manufacturer; even supplying quality pieces for the newly built Parliament building in Canberra.

True to his word Graeme completed the rebuild in late ’70s and used the car enthusiastically at many M.G.C.C. events locally and interstate, often in company with his friend Bill Bennett as passenger.  Ill-health forced its sale in the ’90s and it was bought by Eric Hayes in NSW. Later sold to Errol Rumpf in Qld, however the car saw little use and was allowed to deteriorate in an open carport near the sea until sold in poor condition at auction in 2025.  The engine would not turn, the brakes were dragging and the chrome was green. Much work ensued and within a few weeks the car was running again.

You can read an entertaining report by Julie on the auction here.
