J2 4211

 Midgets / / 17 views

Current owner: Colin McGrory, UK.

MMM No: 1906

Information: Built at Abingdon 9/10/33 CKD and bodyless for export to Australia.   Delivered to Lanes in Melbourne and dispatched to Aspinalls to be fitted with one of their typical doorless 2-seat bodies.

History: On completion the car was registered 130 582 and sold to Britannia Motors and became part of their race team and driven by Jim Skinner.  Its first race was the Winter 100 at Phillip Island in June 1934, one of five J2s in the Britannia Team.  Jim finished in 4th place and was one of three from the team to finish which meant they won the Team Prize.

Jim also entered the 1935 AGP also at P.I., but he retired after only tree laps.

The car then disappears from the records until 1948 and from then we have a succession of owners with cycles of resurrection then deterioration.

In 1976 the chassis was restored although the bodywork had been lost so too the original engine however it came with a proper J2 engine prepared by the renowned John Potter.  The car was then sold to New Zealand and the restoration recommenced in 1980 and completed in 1985 in the style of a factory J2 with cycle guards.

Another succession of owners within N.Z. until it passed into the hands of Geoff Broadhead in 2007.  Geoff’s enthusiasm for the car saw him undertake very thorough research into its history corresponding with many of his Australian Pre-war Register friends leading to him tracking down a number of early owners.

The results of that research contains far more detail than this webpage and you can download the document here.

G.B. sold the car in 2013 to someone describing himself as a collector however he was surprised when the car was shipped to the UK and entered into an auction there.

The car has changed hands a number of times in the UK and when advertised, much is made of the Australian racing history but outwardly the car presents as just another nicely restored J2.
